an ode to my enemies

to all the loud-mouthed conservative lax boys in my ap us history class,

to my trump-supporting-frenemy-turned-running-mate with whom I ran for president of the high school’s chapter of junior statesmen of america in 2015,

to the kant-loving opponents that I faced at the speech and debate tournaments I attended every weekend of my junior year of high school,

to the other starbucks barista who was always just a little bit faster and and a little bit better at making peppermint mocha lattes than me,

to the university administrators who had me running in circles navigating policy change within a bureaucratic shared governance system,

to my academic arch nemesis with whom I was always secretly competing with for better grades (but, because of whom, socratic seminars were always that much more exciting),

thanks for all of it.

thanks for making me second guess myself and forcing me to be more careful about my stances. thanks for pointing out when I was wrong and telling me to check my sources. thanks for teaching me more about the world and helping me see through your eyes.

thanks for making me work harder, think smarter, and achieve greater.

it’s not everyday that your life is serendipitously blessed with the entrance of a person as who you can be proud to call your nemesis. may your lives be blessed with learning, growth, challenges, triumphs, and enemies.
